Transportation in Faro

Faro's transport scene is refreshingly compact. The city bus network is your everyday workhorse, cheap, covers the center and beaches, and runs often enough that you rarely wait long. Taxis sit in ranks near the marina and Old Town; they're a splurge but useful after midnight when buses thin out. For day trips along the coast, the regional train station sits a short walk from the center, with frequent service west to Lagos and east towards Spain. First-timers should know: the bus system uses a rechargeable card sold at kiosks and some hotels, skip the cash queue and load enough for your stay. The old town is entirely walkable; don't waste money on taxis within the walls. If you're staying near Praia de Faro, the summer-only beach shuttle is faster than the regular bus and costs a fraction of a taxi. From the airport, the shared shuttle bus is the sweet spot, direct to the city center in about 20 minutes, running whenever flights land. Taxis wait outside arrivals if you're loaded down with bags or arriving late. Agree the metered fare before you load up. The public bus exists but requires a transfer and adds 30+ minutes, so most visitors skip it.
